Start at the harbour
Hidra Church stands by the water in Kirkehamn. Built in 1854, the white wooden church is a useful landmark for a first stroll among the houses and quays. Start with what is close at hand: the buildings, the waterfront and the history of a sheltered harbour.
Opplev Hidra offers cultural walks by arrangement with a local guide. The stories of shipping and fishing can put names and events to the places you pass. Arrange a walk directly with the operator before your visit.

Hågåsen: a view shaped by war
From Hågåsen, Kirkehamn lies below and the sea stretches beyond. The hill's history as a lookout reaches back to the Napoleonic Wars. During the Second World War, the German occupying forces built Hitterøy coastal fort here.
Ruins and tunnels remain. Information signs connect the traces on the ground with the events that took place. Read a few on the way: the view helps explain why the fort was built on this spot.
Much of the way up follows a gravel road, according to Magma. Read the route description, choose footwear for the conditions and decide whether the walk suits everyone in your group.
Rasvåg: island history in the old schoolhouse
Choose Rasvåg for more time with the island's coastal culture. Narrow lanes and boathouses around the harbour offer a different walk from Kirkehamn.
The Fedrenes Minne coastal museum occupies the old schoolhouse. Its collection reaches far into the past, including a replica of Hidrahakken, a Stone Age find from Kirkehamn. The original is at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. Objects, photographs and accounts place more recent island life in a much longer story.
The museum has regular summer opening hours and opens by arrangement at other times. Consider Rasvåg as an alternative to Hågåsen, leaving time for both the harbour and museum.
The ferry and onward journey
Drive from Egenes to Kvellandstrand. Car ferry route 296 crosses to Launes on Hidra. AKT gives about seven minutes for the crossing itself; driving, waiting and any queues are extra. Continue to Kirkehamn once on the island.
Check outward and return sailings, and any service changes, with AKT before leaving. Arrange guiding and museum visits separately. The ferry and island attractions are not included in your stay at Egenes Camping.
An island day, a mainland base
Back on the mainland, your place by Selura is waiting. Combine Hidra with a day in Flekkefjord, staying in the same cabin, apartment or pitch throughout. Three nights give you two full days between arrival and departure.
